Event Details:

Adventures in Knutkorgar

Join Fred Livesay and Jane Laurence for a whirlwind recap of their 2022 adventures across Scandinavia in search of the secrets of the knutkorg, or knot basket. These woven baskets made their way from Sweden and Finland to the USA with 19th century immigrants, and with support from the American Scandinavian Foundation, Fred and Jane have followed them across Minnesota and back to their original source. History, process, and community connections will all be shared via photos, anecdotes, and some basket show-and-tell. Bring your questions!

Students are invited to stay for Makers Night after the program, a free, open craft night.

Nearly 90 years ago, a new immigrant to Minnesota had a vision to create a vibrant cultural gathering place. Established in 1929, ASI has evolved into a dynamic arts and cultural center that welcomes all people to gather and share experiences around themes of culture, migration, the environment, and the arts; informed by enduring links to Sweden. From the gallery spaces, featuring local and international exhibitions, to the lively programming set in the historic Turnblad Mansion, to the shop, and award winning restaurant and café – there are many ways to see yourself at ASI and be part of this story.
