Swedish Domestic Servants in Minneapolis

Researcher and educator Leanna Swanson lectures on Letters of Hilda, a collection of letters inherited from her great-grandmother Hilda Nyberg Sandstrom. Hilda's story sheds light on the daily life, challenges, and triumphs shared by the many Swedish immigrants who worked as domestic servants in Minneapolis at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Leanna Swanson is an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Bethel University. Preserving local histories that foster a meaningful sense of connection to the past is very important to Ms. Swanson. She has worked with schools to better preserve their own histories and with the Minnesota History Center's Education Department.

Culture & Conversation is a monthly series presented by the American Swedish Institue that explores cultural intersections between Sweden, Scandinavia, and communities around the world. Coffee and tea are provided toward the end of the program. This program includes museum admission.
